Sensor Case Study free essay sample

Few people realize how essential the sensor industry is to today’s society. Sensors can be found in almost everything we use on a day to day basis. America’s demand for smaller, lighter and faster products has driven the technology to innovate at a break-neck pace in order to keep up with the demand. According to the National Science Foundation, â€Å"incorporating new sensor technologies, manufacturers can bring new capabilities to their products while improving performance and efficiency. † (NSF, 2008) The sole shining star in the sensor industry was Sensors, Inc. , which supplied a large majority of the manufacturing industry with electronic sensors for their products. In late 2009, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) broke up Sensors, Inc. due to its monopoly of the U. S. market. (Capsim, 2010) The SEC released a statement which justified their move by stating, â€Å"We cannot allow monopolies of this sort to impact an entire industry! The customers that utilize these sensors are being held hostage. We will write a custom essay sample on Sensor Case Study or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page † (Capsim, 2010) Sensors, Inc. was dissolved into six smaller organizations: Andrew, Baldwin, Chester, Digby, Erie and Ferris companies. A Fresh Start After Sensors, Inc. was dissolved, the assets and liabilities of the company were divided by the six new companies with each company controlling 16. 67% of the market. In 2010, over two-thirds of the sales for the new companies came from the low end and traditional segments of the market (see fig. 1). A break out star from the beginning, Andrews, Inc. saw a clear need to restructure their organization and focus on their attention on other, less crowded segments of the market. Under a new management team, the first mission for Andrews was to decide on a strategy that would allow them to be the standout in the market. Andrews decided to focus on a hybrid strategy that incorporated a broad approach to the market while focusing on three key segments to increase revenue in: Low End, High End and Performance. By focusing on three markets in the industry, the company was able to reduce marketing cost and focus attention their attention on the performance and high end segments which require significant amounts of RD and automation. Andrews sought to gain market share in their target segments by strategically positioning two products in each of their markets. Able (traditional) was to be moved to the low end segment, Agape (size) was to be moved to the high end segment, and a new product, Avenge, was to be added to the lineup in the performance segment. By 2011, Andrews, Inc. was able to establish a dominant presence in two of the three key markets. Focus on Innovation and Quality One of the key strategies for Andrews, Inc. was early and frequent innovation and automation. Because the company focused much of its attention on highly specialized segments of the sensor market, R D played a very import role in the strategic vision of the company. Given the nature of the industry, it is essential for the company to stay on the cutting edge of technology, especially for their high end and performance products. In the high end segment, ideal performance increased by 0. 9 units and size decreased by 0. 9 units each year. Buyers in the high end market value ideal product specifications as the most important factor in their decision to buy a product (43%). Buyers also value the age of a product (29%) when making their decision (Capsim, 2010). For the performance segment, ideal performance increased by 1. 0 units and size decreased by -0. 7 units each year. Buyers in the performance segment value a high reliability rate (43%) and ideal product specifications (29%). (Capsim, 2010) The buyers demand for a high quality product made it necessary to focus a large amount of their resources in those products. The company’s decision to focus on three markets, instead of the original five, allowed them to make the necessary changes without severe financial consequences. Andrews, Inc. also heavily invested early on in automating their factories which allowed the company to save money on labor because of the reduction in the production time for each product as the automation levels increased. (Capsim, 2010). The savings in labor cost helped reduce total variable cost which increased contribution margins. Although the company addressed their labor cost, their materials cost remained higher than the industry average. NamePrimary SegmentMaterial CostLabor CostContr. Marg. The company initially invested in CCE (Concurrent Engineering) and 6 Sigma Training, Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Systems, and Vendor/ Just in Time (JIT) inventory which helped reduce material costs and labor costs as well as administrative overhead. Over the next two years the company sought to use TQM and Process Management initiatives to streamline and improve other areas of their operations. Andrews, Inc. was able to significantly reduce admin cost and R D cycle times by investing these initiatives. Other firms in the industry were gaining sales and market share while Andrews seemed to be running in place. One of the challenges Andrews faced was transitioning their products into their new segments. The company struggled to find a place for their Able product to be successful. As the differences in the segments began to grow, the company waited too long to definitively move the product into the low end segment. While the company’s original strategy of positioning the product between the low end and traditional segments was successful, having a product that didn’t quite fit into either segment negatively impacted sales and let to inventory carrying charges. Andrews also struggled to keep pace with the necessary R D changes necessary to compete in the high end market. The company unsuccessfully tried for three years to position their Agape product in the high end segment. Because the high end segment demands constant R D changes to keep the products up to date, the company wasted millions of dollars on a product that would ultimately never reach the company’s goal. The funds used for Agape would have been put to better use in R D for other products, stock buyback or long term debt repayment. Andrews ran into an issue with was the timing of the production of products. In 2014, Andrews made the mistake of allowing their R D projects to run through the final quarter of the year, leaving little time to produce most of their products. This oversight cost Andrews sales and market share and wasted funds on marketing. Another challenge for the company, and possible the most important was the large amount of long term debt the company owed. At the end of 2015, Andrews owed over $87 million in long term debt and roughly $12 million in short term debt. If the company continues to operate as it has, their credit rating will decline and stock prices will fall. Having such large debt is a liability and shows stockholders that the company’s funds are being mismanaged. In addition to large debts, Andrews, Inc. has oversold its stock. Andrews is in such a vulnerable position that there is a great risk of a corporate takeover. The company must immediately take steps to ensure that they retain ownership of their company. Restructuring Campaign While Andrews, Inc. is still a viable company, there is much to be done if it is to succeed in the future. The first option available is a merger with Baldwin, Inc. After the dissolution of Sensors, Inc. Baldwin struggled to gain its footing in the industry. The company refocused its strategy and gained some traction in 2014. A merger between Andrews and Baldwin would be beneficial because together because their strengths and weaknesses complement each other which would make for a powerful super company. One example of their complementary assets is Andrews highly automated factories and Baldwin’s lack thereof. By condensing factories, AB Sensors, Inc. would be able to cut labor cost and sell off the excess capacity. NamePrimary SegmentMaterial CostLabor CostContr. Marg. Andrews has a strong presence in the Low End, High End, and Performance segments. Baldwin has focused its efforts on the Traditional, Size, High End and Performance segments. By combining their efforts, AB Sensors, Inc. would have control almost 50% of the Low End, Performance and High End segments. Andrews Market ShareBaldwin Market Share Another option for Andrews, Inc. is to hire an external consultant in order to shore up their finances. The company needs to repay its $88,850,000 long term debt and by back at least 50% of the stock issued in order for the firm to increase shareholder value and achieve an higher credit rating. The company should also set aside cash reserve to make capital improvements and eventually be able to pay dividends. I anticipate that the company would be able to achieve these objectives while still growing their presence in the industry over a seven year period. By following either of the strategies, the company will continue to provide highly specialized products to their customers and regain its position at the top of the market.

Brain Drain in India Essays

Brain Drain in India Essays Brain Drain in India Essay Brain Drain in India Essay In no more than 300 words, respond to the following question: To what extent and in what ways do you believe India can alleviate Brain Drain? Strong responses will have the following characteristics: # Answer all parts of the question # Demonstrate originality # Present thought-provoking points of view # English language proficiency to a level where undue strain is not placed on the reader India is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing nations in the world, in terms of technology, education, and opportunities. Yet, we have various constrictions which pose a threat to its striking emergence. One of the major bottlenecks in the pathway of India’s development is Brain Drain. Brain Drain, a common phenomenon in the developing nations, refers to a condition where a large number of technically skilled individuals migrate to another country (a developed one) for various reasons, personal or professional. India has experienced a very high emigration rate in the past few decades. Brian Drain is equivalent to a major financial failure for the country, and adequate steps should be taken by the government in co-operation with the civilian populace to assuage it. Some of the ways by which our country can alleviate Brain Drain are: better infrastructure, better job opportunities, better educational institutions, and the most important of all â€Å"removal of reservations†. Better infrastructure implies to a high quality of lifestyle. Planned residential societies providing all sorts of amenities can surely attract our human resource and avoid their migration to the developed countries in search of a quality living. More industries and businesses should be set up so that ample job opportunities are available for the educated youth. Young India fancies the â€Å"Great American Dream†, and hence lucrative compensation and benefits should be offered to all sectors of employment. Greater opportunities for higher studies and research should be made available to India’s brilliant youth. Sufficient funds should be allocated for research in the burgeoning fields of biotechnology, cloud computing, nanotechnology and so on. However, the principal means of eradicating Brain Drain is the eradication of an equally heinous social stigma called â€Å"reservation†. Reservations should be debarred in all sectors of the society, be it education, workplace, or government. Reservations can only hinder a nation from moving ahead. I am sure that the government of India in unison with our countrymen can do away with Brain Drain provided the above impediments are met.

Identify key features of widely used business application programs - Research Paper Example Word processors have now become one of the basic requisites of businesses. Using a word processor, one can make a document, save it in an electronically conducive format in a disk or drive, display it on monitor, make amendments to it by inserting commands and various typescripts from keyboard and eventually print it (Dibbern, 2004). It has various advantages, which makes it highly popular among literate individuals. Above all, it is convenient then a typewriter in which you have to retype the whole document in case of any error. However, in Word Processor, editing words, paragraphs and formatting is very easy. Word processing applications provide you with â€Å"file management systems, font specifications, referencing systems, graphics, layouts, grammar and spelling checkers, WYSIWYG  (what you see is what you get) etc† (Dibbern, 2004). Some of the popular word processing applications include â€Å"Microsoft Word, Notepad, Google Docs, Lotus Manuscript, WordPad† (Dib bern, 2004), and many more. Presentation software is another category of application program that creates a continuity of words and pictures to present an idea or story. Business presentation applications are user friendly, compatible, and transferable as well. They enable the user to include images, audio, as well as video developed with other tools. Its advantages are many but primarily it helps in appearance of documents, providing snapshot of ideas, sound effects and much more. Some popular presentation software include â€Å"Microsoft PowerPoint, Lotus’s Freelance Graphics, and Corel Presentations, etc† (Dibbern, 2004). These softwares enable a user to have animations attached to their work and improve appearance of data to maximize value. Spreadsheet is one of the most powerful programs used for bookkeeping, scheduling, and data storing purposes. It contains arrangement of cells in the form of table of rows and columns. Mini-Analysis - Research Paper Example This is because as college men, it is important that students will be offered every available opportunity to engage in learning (Vianden, 2009). By exploring the college men’s perceptions about interacting with faculty beyond the classroom, it is becomes possible to understand ways in which this form of learning oriented interaction can be improved. It is therefore important that the questions are well diversified to identify key factors that hinder out-of-class interaction because until such factors are known, it will be difficult to try to improve interaction outside the classroom. The qualitative methodology used in the study was basic interpretive qualitative study. According to the researcher in the study, â€Å"such a design is utilized when researchers are interested in exploring and understanding participants’ perspectives and perceptions† (p. 227). Meanwhile, the researcher’s approach was to undertake a qualitative research. The rationale for selecting basic interpretive qualitative study can be said to be directly linked with the definition given to qualitative research by Diriwà ¤chter & Valsiner (2006). This is because qualitative method was noted to be suitable when a researcher seeks to develop deeper understanding about a given topic and understand how people make meaning of experiences related to the topic. As part of the basic interpretive qualitative study, the researcher used in-depth interview as the major approach to data collection. This approach was helpful in ensuring that the researcher could collect very detailed qualitative opinions and ideas of respondents concerning the topic at hand. Having said this, the researcher could still have used a focus group method to gain even more data than was gathered. Specifically, focus group would have made it possible to collect behavioral data that would have been very important for understanding the issue and for decision making purposes (Seidman, 2013). Schedule Recovery Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Schedule Recovery - Essay Example The flight routes are of the same time length and as such flight swapping has no effect on the amount of fuel cost or maintenance operation per flight time. Both aircrafts travel the same hours as previously scheduled. Aircraft A will be in SCL at the end of the recovery period instead of being in ALX while Aircraft B will be in ALX at the end of the recovery period rather than in SCL. Aircraft swapping as a recovery option also requires crew to swap. The one of the two crews assigned to each flight has to swap as the other one remains with the aircraft. Flight swapping calls for the reserve crew to be called to fill in the gap created (Belobaba, Odoni, Barnhart 265). The crew now assigned to WA 1269 will end up in ATL at the end of the recovery period on flight WA 1276. The three crew remaining will be assigned to flight WA 1270 and at the end of the recovery period they will end up back in SCL on flight WA 1280. Passenger disruption is minimized in this schedule. The affected flight 1269 results in zero passenger disruptions. Flight WA 1270 will have to be delayed for 20 minutes before departure arriving in PHX at 1500h. As a result, there is 20 minutes arrival delay. Although the flight is delayed, the passenger to ALX will not be affected as the next flight WA 1280 will be ready for departure as scheduled at 1600h. The connecting passengers on flight WA 1270 but on a different airline have a chance of misconnecting. Deadheading costs of crew members that find themselves in one position rather than in the usual position. This crew, although, not flying the plane are still considered on duty and have to be paid for this flight. This cost is affected by the place of residence of the crew. Compensation cost of passengers by the airline affects those passengers that have connections to different locations, but with a different airline network. This cost is influenced by the number of passengers who are connecting with different

The History Of Hip Hop Music Essay

The History Of Hip Hop Music Essay Rap as we know it today was originated in the 70s, but the earliest known recited rhyme was performed by the famous boxing champion Muhammad Ali just before his bout with Sonny Liston in which he says: Clay comes out to meet Liston And Liston starts to retreat If Liston goes back any further Hell end up in a ringside seat. Clay swings with a left, Clay swings with a right, Look at young Cassius Carry the fight. Liston keeps backing But theres not enough room Its a matter of time. There, Clay lowers the boom. Now Clay swings with a right, What a beautiful swing, And the punch raises the bear, Clear out of the ring. Liston is still rising And the ref wears a frown, For he cant start counting, Till Sonny comes down Now Liston disappears from view. The crowd is getting frantic, But our radar stations have picked him up Hes somewhere over the Atlantic. Who would have thought? When they came to the fight That theyd witness the launching Of a human satellite Yes, the crowd did not dream When they laid down their money That they would see A total eclipse of the Sonny I am the greatest! (Hip-Hop Timeline, N.D) Todays Rap, or Hip-Hop, was brought into the U.S by a group of Jamaican immigrants in the 70s. One of the Jamaicans, Clive Campbell, A.K.A Kool Herc began, making instrumentals out of two turntables. While another man from the Bronx, Theodore Livingstone, A.K.A Grand Wizard, accidentally discovered the scratching sound of the turntable. Rap was created as an inter-cultural phenomenon of New Yorks poorer sections (Harlem, Soho, Greenwich Village, Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn). Rap became an evolved form of Jamaican dub music which is an instrumental subgenre of reggae music. The rapper would record his voice over a pre-recorded base of percussions, bass and horns (Scaruffi, 2004). The predecessors of rap were disc-jockeys, or spinners, (A.K.A. Djs) who would comment on the song and try to excite people to dance; the deejays became cult figures. Later on, the Bronx was divided into three main parts of influence: Bambaata in the southeast, Hercules in the west, and Grandmaster Flash in the center. They also corresponded to the aspects of different crews. Another part of hip-hop, although not a lyrical one, was graffiti or tagging. Tagging started in Philadelphia sometime in the 1960s, pioneered by such legendary figures as Cornbread and Cool Earl (who may or may not have existed) (Scaruffi, 2004). Soon after, a particular form of graffiti began to appear on the New York subway train Scarfutti P says: the following year the New York Times claimed to have interviewed the tagger, a teenager only known as Taki 183 (also may not have existed). It is unknown whether these graffiti writers really existed because other people began to use the same names to write graffiti around the city (Scaruffi, 2004). The first rap records made were done by the Sugar Hill Gang, who released the song Rappers Delight in 1979 (the song became the first know rap song on Billboard), Kurtis Blow Walker, who wrote the songs, Christmas Rapping and The Breaks, as well as, having the first rap album to go gold. Grandmaster Flash (Joseph Saddler), Melle Mel (Melvin Glover), Kidd Creole (Nathaniel Glover), Cowboy (Keith Wiggins), Raheim (Guy Williams), and Mr. Ness (Eddie Morris) were the third of the early top artist to record songs under the name, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. Rap music began to become more popular and led to the first rap radio show called, Mr. Magics Rap Attack, on WHBI. Then 1981, Grandmaster Flashs album, The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel, became the first album to showcase the use of turntables to make music. Two years later, rappers began to put political messages in their songs, as Kurtis Blow did in the song, The Breaks, and Grand Master Flash had done with The Message. Both songs talked about inner-city poverty instead of just party themes (Scaruffi, 2004 Timeline Help, N.D). It was at this time that rap music began to move outside the park or block party format and saw performers begin to put more thought into their lyrics as they created routines and choruses and catchy phrases. As raps popularity begins to grow and spread from New York to the rest of the country two entrepreneurs, Russell Simmons and Rick Ruben, start a record company out of the dorm room of Rick Ruben who was attending college at the time. The record label, Def Jam Records, became one of the most important record labels ever. Although Russell Simmons was the brother of rapper Run, from the group Run-DMC, he did not have the group on his label in the early years. The label did release T La Rock Its Yours and then followed that with another artist who is still recording to this day, LL Cool J, who recorded I Need A Beat. Other artists began to create songs and the battle rap style (still popular today) began to take the spotlight as the group UTFOs put out a diss song called, Roxanne Roxanne. It was during this time that rap began to combine with other styles of music and moved away from using simple beats made with drum machines. One the biggest and most successful example of this was Run-D MC whose music allowed them to become the first rap act to get airplay on MTV and radio stations throughout the country. Run-DMC put out the first collaboration between rock and rap music and achieved success using this style in their albums: Run-DMC (1984), King of Rock (1985) and Raising Hell (1986). Their hits had a heavy mix of hard-rock guitar riffs and hip hop beats. LL Cool J introduced a softer side to raps hard edge as he recorded the song I Need Love which would become a major part of his appeal and formula for future music. As rap continued to grow in popularity, different forms emerged ranging from political rap (Public Enemy, KRS-ONE) to comedic (Fat Boys, Slick Rick) to the later, more edgy forms of gangster rap made introduced by artists from the West Coast. Rap was able to cross racial lines also as white artists, such as, the Beastie Boys released their first album, License to Ill, in 1987, which mixed punk rock and hip-hop and became a top selling group in the history of rap music. Other artist focused on developing strong wordplay skills, using metaphors and similes to separate themselves from other artists of the time. These artists, such as, Kool Moe Dee, Rakim and KRS-ONE helped to elevate the art form while also promoting the development of intellectual thoughts in the music. Boogie Down Productions releases Criminal Minded and following the release KRS-ONEs DJ Scott LaRock is shot and killed trying to settle and argument. Public Enemy stuns the world when they drop Yo Bum Rush The Show which signals the beginning of politically motivated Hip-Hop. During this time Rick Rubin leaves Def Jam and founds Def America. (Adaso, N.D). Kool Moe Dee Battles LL Cool J begins with Moe Dees How You Like Me Now LLs response to this was Jack the Ripper the feud would continue until Moe Dee tries to battle LL at a St Louis concert and LL refuses so Moe Dee broke down his name to diss him and then slammed the mic down in victory (Hip-Hop Timeline, N.D). After a long battle with crack-addiction Cowboy from Grandmasters Furious Five dies at age 28. Dr.Dres protà ©gà © D.O.C releases No One Can Do It Better D.O.C ends up in a terrible accident and although he survives his career however didnt. NWAs Niggaz for life album reaches #1 on pop charts and sells almost a million copies in its first week. Then Nas Illmatic album goes gold is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest albums in Hip-Hop history. The same year Warren Gs Regulate: The G-Funk Era Goes 4x platinum. Soon artists started to want a boycott against gangsta-rap artists like Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dog and 2Pac because of their violent lyrics (Adaso, N.D). 2 Pac is robbed and shot 5 times in a New York studio. After he recovers Pac is then sentenced to 8 months in prison. 2 Pacs death row career takes off after prison Adaso, H says 2 Pac signs a deal with Death Row Records after Suge Knight posts a $1.4 million bail. On September 7th, Tupac Shakur is murdered after being shot multiple times as he rode in a car driven by Ceo of Death Row Records Marion Suge Knight near the Las Vegas strip. Tupac died 5 days later. His death once again sparked the debate on whether rap promotes violence or just reflects the ugly side of the streets (Adaso, N.D). 2Pacs New York counterpart Biggie Smalls is also killed Adaso, H says The Notorious B.I.G. is murdered in a drive-by shooting only six months after 2Pacs murder. His second album, released only a few days later, and ironically titled Life After Death becomes the best selling rap album of all time (Adaso, N.D). Eminem is signed to after math records and releases his debut album the Slim Shady lp which despite racial complications sells 4 million copies. The following year Eminem releases the Marshall Mathers lp which solidifies his spot as a future great in the rap community. The album sells 1.76 million in the first week out and Eminem receives two Grammies for his work. Just after 9/11 two of New York greats Nas and Jay-Z begin to battle after years of subliminal attacks Jay-Z hits Nas with the Takeover and Nas strikes back with the earth-shattering Ether Jay-Z bounces back with hard hitting Super Ugly (rapped over the instrumental of Nass Got Yourself A Gun) in which Jay talks about having sex with Nas baby momma. New Yorks Hot 97 asks for a vote to pick a winner. While votes are being tallied up Jay rushes to apologize for the vulgar lyrics in the freestyle but it doesnt change the fact the Nas won the battle however fans would forever debate the victor of the battle. Jam Master Jay (Dj of Run-DMC) is murdered in a Queens Bridge studio. No convictions have been made on his murder. More battles emerge such as: Nelly vs. KRS-One, Eminem vs. The Source magazine, Jermaine Dupri vs. Dr. Dre and more. More violence emerges Adaso, H says: In the middle of the 2004 Vibe Awards ceremony, a man named Jimmy James Johnson approaches rap legend Dr. Dre, who was preparing to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, and punches him in the face. A full-on brawl ensues during which Johnson gets stabbed. After reviewing tape of the melee, authorities identify the stabber as G-Unit rapper Young Buck, a member of Dr. Dres label. Suge Knight, who also crashed the event, later denies allegations that he had promised Johnson $5000 to assault Dr. Dre. Nas and Jay end their long feud at a 2005 power 105 concert. Eminem becomes the new face of the argument of Hip-Hop racism Adaso H says: Eminem becomes the new focus of a debate on hip-hop and racism after some unidentified friends of the rapper submitted a tape of him using the N-word and making several derogatory remarks about the African-American community. Sample lyrics from the Eminem tape: Black girls are b****es/ Thats why Ima tell ya you better pull up your britches/Cause all that cash is making your a** drag. On another song, he rhymes: Black girls and white girls just dont mix/Because Black girls are dumb and white girls are good chicks. The Source uses the tape to renew their anti-Eminem campaign, even releasing a CD version of the racist tape. In response, Eminem apologizes publicly and claims the rap was done out of teen angst following a break-up with a black girlfriend. Eminem says: I did and said a lot of stupid s**t when I was a kid, but thats part of growing up, said Eminem in a statement. The tape of me rapping 15 years ago as a teenager that was recently put out by The Source in no way represents who I was then or who I am today. This is a collection of some of the most significant events in Hip-Hop from the beginning to 2004. With more time however I would have liked to touch up on establishing some of the more influential aspects of Hip-Hop and those who made them popular. What I hoped to achieve with this report is that Hip-Hop wasnt originally about who has the most record sales or who has the best cars of jewelry it was as KRS-ONE often says: peace love unity and having fun. Anyway Id like to thank you for taking the time to read this.

Changes in the twenty first century workplace Essay example -- Technol

It was once a common belief that if employees worked hard, showed up on time and followed the rules that they would be guaranteed a job for life. However, over the last decade there have been changes in the workplace. There are two main causes for this change. The changes in the work place in the twenty-first century are being caused by advancements in technology and expansions in globalization through the Internet. The advancement in technology across the world is a major cause of the changes in the workplace. For instance, the advancements in computers are astounding. Mainframe computers have given way to personal computers, then laptop computers, and now hand-held tablets. Findings of a study by IDC, a market research company, showed that by 2015 more people will be connecting to the Internet using tablets, smart phones, and other mobile gadgets compared to those who use the Internet through their desktop computers (Schroeder). Cell phones have also seen a revolution by becoming faster, more efficient and more feature-rich. It is even possible to check email on the way to work using a handheld device. A Nielson fact sheet outlining the usage of various devices in America shows that â€Å"there are 223 million cell phone users over the age of 13, and 25% of the mobile devices sold during Q3 of 2009 were smart phones. That is estimated to go up to between 40-50% during 2010† (Heimbuch). Individuals can text, status update, tweet, or reach other seamlessly by mobile devices that can fit in their pockets. Even the printed word may become obsolete according to Aaron Bradley, as outlined in his online article called â€Å"A Modest Proposal for Newspapers in the 21st Century.† In his article, he discusses how the printing of newspapers is be... ...in the new â€Å"flat world† individuals need to figure out how to become â€Å"untouchable.† He explains that â€Å"untouchables are people whose jobs cannot be outsourced, digitized, or automated† (184). He explains that in a â€Å"flat world† there is no longer a job based solely on geographic, but rather in most cases an available job â€Å"will go to the best, smartest, most productive or cheapest worker-wherever he or she resides† (183). He goes on to show that companies and individuals have to look at the global picture today in order to succeed (183). The work place has changed through the course of the centuries. Technology and globalization are the causes of the change in the workplace in the twenty-first century. Who does what work, when, and how will continue to evolve as technology becomes increasingly more advanced and communication across the globe becomes more seamless.

The Wanting Seed

In Anthony Burgess’ The Wanting Seed, the story starts off, in what is known to the main character, Tristram, as the Pelphase. Tristram is a history teacher and knows mostly all there is to know about history. According to Tristram, governments go through three phases: the Pelphase, the Interphase, and the Gusphase. Tristram believes that like almost everything else, government is cyclical. The Pelphase is a time in the government and society where the people are working to better themselves, their surroundings and their country. The people don’t just work for themselves; they work together. Overpopulation has always been a problem in the futuristic London that Burgess portrays. God has become a myth even though some still practice their religion. God has turned into some sort of Santa Clause because everyone is working to better the problems that they and the government are having. The government suggests that homosexuality could help the population troubles, but they don’t enforce it or make it law. People have the choice to have children or be homosexual. The government hands out rations of food every week because the crops aren’t growing and overpopulation is so prevalent. The rations are just enough to keep the people full and content. When the government realizes that nothing is working out and the crops still wont grow and overpopulation is still a giant problem, they give up the current ways and move on to new ways of governing. This brings the Interphase along. The Interphase is black and white compared to the Pelphase. It is a transition phase where things must be broken in order to fix them. When the government realized that giving people the choice to have children or be homosexual isn’t working in everyone’s favor and the crops are still aren’t growing, they made it mandatory to either be gay or have only one child and in addition to that the food rations have gotten smaller. Police (Greyboys) walked the beat in large groups looking for people that were breaking laws or people that weren’t. Taking them to jail for nothing was fine with the Greyboys. Innocent people were thrown in jail and kept in jail just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. With all of the growing animosity towards the Greyboys and the government, people start to question and revolt. Nobody wants to go hungry; the straights don’t want to go gay; the families don’t want to break up. The Interphase didn’t last too long because of how badly the citizens felt about it. People were rising against the government and demanding their rights back. The government couldn’t take the pressure so they just ended up doing nothing. They literally did nothing. They left it up the people. With that decision came the Gusphase. The Gusphase was a wild and crazy time. People were going crazy in the streets, killing and looting. The government had no control over anything anymore. Hungry groups of people started attacking and cooking up Greyboys. They were creating exclusive cannibalistic dining clubs and taking part in intense orgies. The government lost so much of the control it once had, all of the prisons were emptied and the prisoners set free. With so much chaos going on, people were forced to fend for themselves and it became survival of the fittest. During all of the madness, priests and bishops were aloud to preach the word of their God again and that is what people held on to in this time of madness. The Gusphase, just like the Interphase, didn’t last long. The government eventually regained control of the population and things were back to the way they started, Pelphase. In the Pelphase after the horrible Gusphase, things were different than before. People were now aloud to have children and homosexuality wasn’t pressured upon the people. On the surface, it seemed as if the government has learned from their mistakes but under the surface things have taken a very deadly turn. The army had most of the control in the government now. The army went town to town tricking people into joining the army. After the people went through long and rigorous training they were sent off to the front lines in western Ireland. They weren’t fighting the Irish however; they were fighting other British men and women. The government set up elaborate shows to pretend that there was a war and when it came down to the actual battle the two sides of British would clash in a bloody death match. At the end of the fight, officers from the army, who were in on the whole scheme, executed the survivors so know one would find out about their evil idea of population control. Thanks to Tristram’s smarts and instincts, he was able to survive. He made his way back to the army headquarters and told them that he knew the whole plot. They didn’t pay him any mind, gave him his discharge check, and sent him on his way. He ended up going back to where he started before all of the crazy times London experienced in the past couple of years. He landed a job as a war history teacher and bought a new flat with his discharge money. After he was settled he found Beatrice-Joanna and his twin sons. Things finally came full circle for Tristram. In may ways, Tristram’s journey was a lot like the phases that the government went through. He had endured the brunt of each phase. He experienced the worst that each phase had to offer a human being. He survived and lived happily again.

In the past, the communist party exercised its control over the society but now the increasing freedom to make choices about education and employment weakened the work unit system that was once the basic cell of the communist party control over society. China is the world’s second largest economy and is ruled by the Chinese communist party, which has been in power for more that six decades. In spite of this fact, China’s political institutions and political culture have evolved significantly over those years. China’s power structure has been a monopoly but many analysts both in China and abroad have queried the long-term feasibility of it, which the party remains above the law and civil society and the freedom of speech and alliance are strictly guarded. Thankfully, China’s retiring Premier Wen Jiabao called for political transformation and the reorganization of the leadership system of the party and the state. He noted that without the success of political reform, it is impossible to institute economic structural changes. The Chinese Communist Party controls the state and the society in China. It has power over the armed forces, and is in charge of employing people in all political, state-owned, and public institutions. The media , judiciary and the internal security apparatus is also under the control of the Chinese communist. China’s governing party enjoys maximum party control, by ensuring that the highest ranking state officials at every level of government simultaneously hold senior party positions,. The country was able to shield its industries from competition by implementing unfair economic policies, such as rules stating that Chinese should own a 51 percent stake in a foreign joint undertaking. Since its entry into the World Trade Organization, the China’s economy became market oriented and the country has become the major manufacture of most of the world’s products. China has one of the highest foreign direct investment rates in the world (Morrison 7). This has enabled the country to produce low cost items in large scale.Advertising Looking for essay on political sciences? Let's see if we can help you! The high economic growth has given the country the wealth it requires to develop its infrastructure, which is essential for development. The Chinese Communist Party realized that it had to adapt to the fast changing society. Therefore, it developed mechanisms of modifying its governing ideology to facilitate the necessary transformations for the sake of its continued existence. Yet it was careful in its approach and avoided challenging its ideology to an extent, which would further compromise its already questionable justifications for maintaining an everlasting cartel on power. In its quest to get into power, the People’s Republic of China the Party assured the citizenry that it would help peasant farmers and workers improve their working conditions and livehoods. It also guaranteed that socialistic ideologies would be entrenched, and all property would be publicly owned . In its constitution, the party still authoritatively decrees the recognition of communism to be its supreme ideal and ultimate goal. As a ruling party, the Chinese Communist Party now defines itself as representing the basic aspirations of the vast majority of the Chinese people including capitalists. In 2007, China at last passed a law protecting private property rights. This was after realizing that privately owned enterprises had started achieving double-digit economic growth rates in its coastal provinces and that the real estate segments were booming. I Knew This Was My Moment Essay Example

I Knew This Was My Moment Essay Example I Knew This Was My Moment Essay I Knew This Was My Moment Essay It seemed as though he noise was emanating from the back door. I crept stealthily on my tip-toes through the living room and the kitchen. The banging was becoming more intense. I craned my long neck and peered through a side window. What I beheld in my vision made me gasp in horror. There on the landing stood a strange-looking character all donned in black. He was fiddling with the locks in his attempt to enter the house. In his hand, he held a menacing-looking weapon. His face was dark and hidden. My first reaction was to call the police. I bolted up the stairs and dashed into my room. With trembling fingers, I searched quickly for my BlackBerry. I dialed the number of the Police Station that was in close proximity to our house. Luckily my parents had printed out a list of the emergency phone numbers and stuck it on my bedroom wall. I spoke to the curator and explained my predicament. After talking to the sergeant, I dialed my parents who seemed annoyed on hearing my voice. After moments, they realized that something was wrong. I briefly explained to them the entire situation. My dad became worried and advised me to remain upstairs and to lock the bedroom door. By this time, I could hear some fidgeting and tampering of items in the living room. It seemed as though the intruder had entered our house. My fear knew no bounds and it multiplied by the dozen. I was shaking like a leaf in the wind on a breezy day. Several minutes later, all was calm and still. Suddenly in the distance, I could discern the piercing shrill of the sirens of the police. With relieved emotions, I quietly peered through my bedroom window. They made a swerve on our driveway and surrounded the house with their squad cars. I heard scampering feet up the stairs, it seemed as though the robber was trying to devise a scheme to make a getaway. I quickly arouse to my feet however my head bumped into the bookshelf above me and a load of heavy books came crashing to the ground. The house-breaker caught his attention of the noise. Come out with your both hands up in the air or we will open fire! He hastily stroke hard blows and kicks at my door to break it open. Unfortunately he Jerked open the door, without spearing a single second, I grabbed my baseball bat and smacked him one tough stroke in his stomach. He fell to the hard, cold, tiled floor of my bedroom in a great deal of pain and discomfort. With my head still throbbing, I made a dash for it and bolted down the flight of stairs. I sped to the front entrance and unlocked the door. I darted out and noticed all the alert detected it was me, the chief police officers exclaimed to hold fire. I informed the situation with the burglar upstairs to the chief and they gathered a few members and headed upstairs. How alleviated I was when the criminal was eventually seized, handcuffed and conveyed outside. Some moments later, my frightened parents returned to our residence. I excitedly scarped towards them and greeted them both with such a loving hug. Oh how happy they were to see me safe and sound! Moments later the police officers and the handcuffed bandit approached my parents and l, the police asked me if I would like the honor to pull of the mask from the thief. I bravely accepted, the police gasped in shock when the face of the man was discovered. It turned out that I was a heroine, the intruder turned out to be a serious wanted criminal for various charges. The next day, there was a function held on my behalf to honor the bravery of me and for assisting in catching the criminal. As I walked on stage to collect my shiny medal from the chief police officer, I thought to myself, l knew this was my moment!

Careers in Archaeology Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Careers in Archaeology - Research Paper Example Before World War II, professional archaeology grew out of the growth of antique markets and the development of large museums. Nevertheless, after the war, archaeologists found their place within a specialized department in most major universities, and in the 1970s, a private market for archaeology expanded with the growth of government regulations on cultural preservation (Patterson). Professional archaeologists in an academic setting choose between three generally defined subgroups of academia: the university, the college, and the community college. The first, the university, features a faculty that teaches graduate courses, courses in an upper-level undergraduate context, and introductory level courses. Since the university is the only institution that offers advanced graduate degrees in archaeology, such as the Ph.D., a Ph.D. is likely required to be hired to a university staff. However, having a Ph.D. alone is not good enough for a vast majority of universities looking to hire ne w faculty. A college or a community college offers only upper level and introductory level teaching positions. Faculty otherwise spend their time petitioning for research funds or actually conducting their research in laboratories or the field. Archaeologists may also find themselves in other departments within the college or university, such as in anthropology, art history, architecture, and history. Teaching archaeology, according to some authors, requires a high degree of creativity to allow students to understand the material and social processes that generate their own subjectivity and to question and transform these processes (Hamilakis 288).   Also primarily within the public sphere are museum positions open to archaeologists to contribute to the museum’s collection of historical artifacts.
